Parish Social Action Forum (PSAF)

Parish Social Action Forum (PSAF)

Its Role and Need in Every Parish of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, 2026

Brief: The Parish Social Action Forum (PSAF) is the grassroots social-action arm of the parish. Its purpose is to translate Christian concern for people and society into practical action within the parish community.

PSAF should identify social, economic, environmental and humanitarian concerns, assist vulnerable families, create awareness about rights and government schemes, and work with appropriate Church, government and community institutions to find solutions.
A. Civic Awareness & Government Schemes
Election Awareness: Encouraging informed and responsible participation in Assembly and Parliamentary elections.
Government Schemes: Guiding marginalized and deserving families in accessing government social-welfare, health and livelihood schemes.

B. Environmental Protection & Ecology
Village Cleanliness & Waste: Organising cleanliness drives, waste-management initiatives, recycling awareness and other activities addressing Goa's environmental concerns.
Defending Eco-Assets: Working with the Council for Social Justice and Peace and other appropriate bodies to create awareness and respond to environmental threats such as unauthorised hill-cutting, destruction of natural resources and threats to village heritage.

C. Grassroots Social Welfare
Mapping Vulnerability: Identifying homebound senior citizens, sick persons, persons with disabilities and families experiencing extreme poverty across all Vaddos.
Skill Development Support: Collaborating with Caritas Goa and other organisations to organise local skill-development programmes, such as tailoring and small-scale crafts, for women and youth.
Crisis Assistance: Coordinating immediate local relief, support and resource mobilisation during floods, emergencies or serious family crises.

Why PSAF is needed in every parish in Goa in 2026

Goa is changing rapidly. The traditional parish community is no longer isolated from wider social, economic and environmental pressures. Elderly people may live alone, families can face financial difficulties, young people need employment and skills, government welfare schemes can be difficult to navigate, and villages are increasingly affected by waste, construction pressure and environmental concerns.
This is precisely where a parish-level social-action body is valuable. A diocesan organisation cannot realistically know the needs of every family, Vaddo and neighbourhood.

PSAF can act as the eyes, ears and hands of the parish at the grassroots level.
Its strength is its proximity to people. Members are familiar with the community and can identify situations that may otherwise remain unnoticed. The forum can then connect those needs with the resources of the Church, government departments, NGOs, Caritas, civic authorities and other organisations.
Most importantly, PSAF should not become another committee that exists mainly on paper. Its effectiveness depends on members understanding their responsibilities, meeting regularly, identifying actual needs and following matters through to their conclusion.

For a teenager, the idea is simple: if your parish is a family, PSAF is one of the groups responsible for noticing when someone in that family needs help and doing something practical about it.
Having a title without doing the work defeats the purpose of having the organisation in the first place. Human beings have already invented enough committees that meet, take minutes and then accomplish absolutely nothing.

In 2026, every parish in Goa needs a functioning PSAF because social action must begin where people actually live: in the neighbourhoods, Vaddos and families that make up the parish.

Farming in Betalbatim gets mechanised

Farming in Betalbatim saw a new wave as the fields in front of the Our Lady of Remedios Church were cultivated this year. The newly formed BETALBATIM FARMER's ASSOCIATION hopes to revive the farming activity in Betalbatim. The traditional methods farming in Goa like transplanting and harvesting are labour intensive which makes it financially uneconomical. This is one of the reasons that many gave up growing their paddy fields. The absence of proper fencing to keep out cattle from feasting on the crop is another reason that is a huge block.
