World Environment Day Program at Margao on 5th June

World Environment Day Program at Margao on 5th June
----------------------------------------------------------
The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN)
together with the Benaulim Environment Trust (BET) will
observe World Environment Day 5th June with the theme
Protect Water Protect Life at the Kharebandh Bridge
in Margao.

The public gathering which will start at 8.30am and end at
10.30am will focus on the protection and restoration of all
polluted water bodies with a special focus on River Sal.
Another significant focus of the day will be the need for
Total Sanitation and Toilet Access for all consumers in
Goa as it is the prime cause of water contamination.

It may be noted that the Benaulim Environment Trust has
undertaken significant studies on the pollution levels of the
River Sal, the causes and possible solutions for the restoration
of the river.

It may also be noted that the Consumer Forums have been
consistently campaigning to protect water with the observation
of the World Water Day 22nd March at Pateapur, Nuvem
followed by the observation of Earth Day on 22nd April near
Saipem Lake, Navelim.

It may be recalled that the Goa State Pollution Control Board
conducted site visits and took water samples from the River Sal
and the Saipem Lake after persistant demands by the Navelim
Civic and Consumer Forum.

Recently, the South Goa District Disaster Management Committee
under the Chairmanship of the South Goa Collector has constituted
a Sub-Committee consisting of the Margao Municipal Council,
PWD Sewerage and the Goa State Pollution Control Board to
examine the causes of pollution of the River Sal and the Saipem
Lake at Navelim.

GOACAN calls upon environmentally conscious citizens to join
the gathering on World Environment Day 5th June and extend
solidarity to the Protect Water Protect Life Campaign.
